Exeter

Exeter is a historic city and Devon’s county town. Located just 40 minutes’ drive from Beverley Holidays.

This vibrant city has so much to offer, whether you’re visiting during a romantic couple’s break or on a fun-filled holiday with the kids.

History

Built around the River Exe and surrounded by beautiful countryside, Exeter is a picturesque city with an interesting past. Discover more of its history on a free Red Coat walking tour or head to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery to see artefacts dating back more than 2,000 years!

Exeter Cathedral is one of Exeter’s biggest attractions and a must see during your trip. This medieval cathedral boasts stunning gothic architecture and stone carvings dating back hundreds of years. You can admire its beauty from the outside on the cathedral green or pay a small fee to go inside.

Attractions

There’s plenty of things to see and do during your time in Exeter. For a unique experience, venture deep underground and explore the network of underground passages that lie beneath the city.

We highly recommend taking a walk from the city centre to the historic quayside. From here you can hire a bike, kayak, stand up paddleboard, or canoe and follow the River Exe to the sea. Pack a picnic or make plans to stop at one of the pubs along the route for a bite to eat. It’s one of the best ways to admire the scenery and appreciate the beauty of the area.

Shopping

If you’re looking to indulge in a spot of retail therapy during your stay at Beverley Holidays, we highly recommend a day trip to Exeter. Despite its small size, Exeter boasts a diverse array of shops, including national retailers and independent boutiques. Princesshay shopping centre is home to over 70 well-known brands set within an attractive outdoor precinct. If you venture off the high street, you’ll find an eclectic mix of jewellers, vintage and home interior shops, where you’re bound to pick up something special to commemorate your visit.

Eat and Drink

Over the years Exeter has earned a reputation as a foodie hot spot, with a fantastic array of cafes and restaurants dotted across the city. There’s plenty of culinary delights to sample, from small family run eateries to national chains. Plus, there are a number of award-winning pubs and cocktail bars to choose from.

Art and Culture

Exeter is a hub of arts and culture with selection of entertainment venues, should you wish to catch a show during your stay. Exeter Phoenix hosts comedy nights, gigs and a variety of creative workshops. Northcott Theatre and Powderham Castle boast a packed events schedule, attracting word class performers throughout the year.

Exeter is also home to Exeter Chiefs Premiership rugby union team. Why not coincide your visit with a trip to Sandy Park to catch a game?
