Winter can be a tough time in the parenting calendar. Trying to keep your kids entertained with endless hours of indoor activities is never fun (and almost always messy), but fear not because there’s plenty to keep the whole family occupied right here on the English Riviera. From twinkling illumination trails to a chance to see our award-winning zoo and its wild inhabitants after hours, here’s our guide to keeping your little ones well and truly entertained this winter.

The Illumination Trail Returns

This winter, the English Riviera once again flicks the switch on its hugely popular Illumination Trail – a free route running from Torre Abbey to Torquay town centre which sees many of Torquay’s sights adorned with festive lights. Strike a pose in front of the 12-metre-high Christmas tree, making sure you time your visit for its spectacular digital sound and light show. Travel through a light tunnel covered top to toe in twinkling lights, plus plenty more illuminations around the harbourside and beyond from 1 December 2023 to 3 January 2024.

GloWild At Paignton Zoo

Paignton Zoo is ending its centenary year in true celebratory style with its biggest-ever festive event, GloWild. Enjoy an after-hours look around the zoo when its animal residents really do come awake, with the immersive light experience taking place from 17 November 2023 to 2 January 2024. A giant illuminated storybook greets you on arrival, with visitors then invited to step into a magical nighttime safari around the zoo’, complete with lit-up trees, tunnels, magical wishing well and a silent disco.

Bays Of Lights

If you’re wondering why the English Riviera is getting ‘lit’ this winter, it all forms part of The Bay Of Lights – a glittering event taking place across Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. As well as a the Illumination Trail on Torquay seafront and events at Paignton Zoo, there’s plenty more bulb action to be had including the legendary Train of Lights which returns in all its glowing glory this winter. Plus, the nearby fishing town of Brixham comes alight for its Lights, Lanterns and Luminations event which features a magical lantern parade throughout its cobbled streets, and fireworks display.
